Improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness through Condition Monitoring
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is commonly defined as a measure comparing how well manufacturing equipment
is running compared to the ideal plant. The resulting measurement is expressed as the ratio of the actual output
of the equipment divided by the maximum output of the equipment under ideal conditions. The difference between the
ideal and the actual situation is a result of losses.
OEE is based on three components of the manufacturing process; availability, performance, and quality. Therefore,
the equation translates to OEE = Availability x Performance rate x Quality rate.
The result is expressed as a percentage. This percentage is considered the current production efficiency for that
machine. Availability refers to the actual time a machine was available for production when scheduled. Performance
refers to speed loss, taking into account any factors that caused the machine to operate at less than maximum speed
when running. Lastly, quality refers to time that was wasted by the machine producing a product that does not meet
quality standards.
One way many companies are improving their overall equipment effectiveness is through condition monitoring. Condition
monitoring is a process of monitoring the condition of machinery, whereas a significant change is indicative of a
developing failure. Conditioning monitoring also prompts maintenance scheduling or other action before failure actually occurs.
ProvibTech specializes in vibration protection and condition monitoring. Previously PredicTech, they are a global
supplier of advanced machinery protection and condition monitoring systems, featuring the latest in monitoring equipment –
including their newest PT2060 monitoring system. The PT2060 is a state-of-the-art rack-based continuous monitoring system
ideal for critical machinery protection applications. The PT2060 is capable of supporting up to 56 channels per rack,
providing the industry’s highest channel density.
